Ethics and the Social Teaching of the Church for Emerging Technologies

This course explores ethical principles in technology design and application, emphasizing natural law, human rights, and a Catholic perspective of freedom and work. It examines integral human development, economic and social justice, and rights of individuals and cultures. A model based on Catholic social teaching is introduced to assess the impact of technology on people and communities, addressing moral errors like materialism and consequentialism. Topics include privacy, equity, digital surveillance, fairness in algorithms, civil liberties, and power dynamics in society and social media. Pre-requisites: Standard admission requirements.
