Alumni Spotlight: Dave Stechschutle

Meet Dave Stechschutle, a 2019 graduate of Catholic International University’s BA in Theology program.

Before earning his degree, Dave spent 16 years as a dedicated hospice nurse, offering physical care to those nearing the end of their lives. About a decade into his nursing career, he felt a deeper call—one that led him back to church in 2007 and eventually to pursue a one-year diploma in theology. His journey brought him to Catholic International in 2012, where he discovered an online program that fit his life as an older, part-time student.

“Being in my 40s, the online experience was new to me,” Dave recalls. “But I loved the flexibility of studying when I wanted, taking exams, and taking classes at my own pace. It was a painless situation for someone my age.”

After graduating, Dave transitioned to his current role as a full-time hospice chaplain. “When people are in hospice, they’re not only in physical pain but also in spiritual and emotional pain. My job is to prepare them for the spiritual transition,” he explains. “We are not ready for death, and I help start that conversation. No matter their background, I walk them through the hard questions of life and death.”

Dave credits his theological education at Catholic International with equipping him for the profound responsibility of ministering to those at the end of life. “You need to be prepared theologically for this work. We’re talking about life and death, and you better have answers! Catholic International prepared me for that.”

For Dave, the work of a hospice chaplain is deeply fulfilling and reciprocal. “We’re all doing God’s work when we care for the dying. Even the families become ministers in a way. I gain just as much from this work as my patients do. Oftentimes, my patients minister to me through their peaceful faith and trust in God.”

As he reflects on his calling, Dave emphasizes the transformative power of suffering when united with Christ. “We participate in Christ’s suffering, and through it, He allows us to see the effect we have on others. When you can show someone how their suffering touches lives, it’s a game changer.”

Dave’s journey is a testament to the impact of answering God’s call, the value of lifelong learning, and the grace that comes from walking with others in their most vulnerable moments.
