This course was formerly THEO 551 Theology of the Sacraments. This course explores the faith and life of the Catholic Church with regard to the sacraments and the entire liturgical life of the church including the sacramentals and the Liturgy of the Hours. It builds upon the historical framework imparted by Theo 503, Catholic Theological Tradition, and the theology of symbolic revelation learned in Fundamental Theology. After discussing the biblical, historical, and dogmatic basis of the Church’s liturgical life and each of the seven sacraments , we will explore how we can deepen and enrich our participation in divine worship and lead others to richer, more fruitful liturgical and sacramental experience. We will strive, as we explore a topic that often leads to bitter polarization in the church, to distinguish between what is found everywhere, always, by every one (unchanging Tradition) and the changeable liturgical traditions, particular to time and place, that serve to express this Tradition. Students who complete this course will be acquainted with the primary sources on liturgy and sacraments from fathers, doctors, and Magisterium and be able to plan liturgical services in the ordinary form of the Roman rite and participate in sacramental catechesis. They will also have an appreciation of other rites of the Church, including the Roman rite’s extraordinary form as well as some of the Eastern rites, with an eye towards serving the cause of unity amidst legitimate diversity.
